News Gleaned from Instagram Comments:

  • Re: demographics: lots of partners on board to satisfy- mandate is go younger but keep the edge- we’ll get it right
  • Re: evolution of Adriane’s character design: depends where she is on her character arc- in the beginning def more reserved- once Kara enters her life, she does try some new things
  • Re: demographics and character design: getting the girls’ age right for our key demo (7-10) is the biggest challenge – and there’s lots of cooks in the kitchen which is normal with so many different partners so it’s going to be a balance – this is the best so far.
  • Re: animation: CGI but we want more of an anime look with shading rather than full 3D like Trollhunter or Spy Kids
  • Re: demographics: that’s the sweet spot for licensing which is how investors make their money back – however the show will appeal to a much wider age range like the Disney / Pixar films do
  • Re: broadcasting: we don’t have a US broadcaster yet – once we have an episode or 2 finished we will shop it – this way they know exactly what they are getting- production start is looking like July- finishing in 2020 / 2021 – sounds like a long time but this will look more like a movie than a tv series – the good news is once the pipeline is up and running we can move right into season 2 for faster turnaround
  • Re: production and character designs: we’re very close, hang in there. We doing some redesigns on characters as well — will have some new pics soon
  • Re: broadcasting: TBD – we will start production then sell the package of 13 it to pone of the streamers like Netflix or amazon

Avalon Production Update, 18 December 2017

Your weekly (?) round-up of updates on the Avalon: Web of Magic animated series!

I can’t take full credit for this update, so: Thanks, Avery, for the heads-up on the official Avalon website going back online!

Notes from the Archivist:

Hey! They tweaked the poster! There’s more grass, more magical effects, and some shading on the tagline and title. Also, Kara doesn’t look quite as bad here.

The most interesting part of the improved poster, however, is the billing block (the small text beneath the title). This is the first time we’ve seen a voice cast or the names of anyone connected with the Avalon series! Let’s break this down:

VOICE CAST:

WRITERS / DIRECTORS:

  • Robert Mandell (creator of Princess Gwenevere / Starla and the Jewel Riders)

Unfortunately, we don’t know who’s lending their voices to which characters! So try to guess who’s playing who in the comments.

While digging through the official Avalon site, I also found some larger concept art images for the mages and a new Ravenswood Preserve map. Someone who has better eyes than me can try to read all those landmarks on the map and see if they’ve added anything new.

News from Instagram Comments:

  • Re: production and release date: “we are finishing the sales reel now for presentation to the broadcasters. Plan is to start production in fall for summer/ fall 2018 launch” [source]
  • Re: the mages’ clothing: “there will be different outfits designed for the girls depending on where the stories take them” [source]
  • Re: network and website: “we don’t know yet which network will play the episodes. We start meetings in Sept and will keep you posted. We are working on a new website as well.” [source]
  • Re: Be*Tween and series music: “we have B*Tween in a few episode story outlines but we’re not sure what songs will be used yet. We’ll figure it out when we start scripts. For our sales demo, Amy Lee is letting us use one of her songs from Evanescence. How cool is that 🎶!” [source]
  • Re: website and contacting Rachel Roberts: “ya that site needs a complete overhaul. We’re focused on getting the series up and running first. We’ll set up some social for Rachel, twitter or the site or something- which would you prefer?” [source]

Tangentially Related:

Frequent followers of the voyager.world Instagram account may have noticed their occasional updates on a series called Battle Dragons. I’ve looked into them and discovered that it’s a repackaging of the Bazil Broketail book series, with each book split into two volumes. Also, if you look through the official voyager.world site, you’ll find that they used a promo image from Rachel Roberts’ Sky Rider series in the character guide section.

Notes from the Archivist:

  • They better post the sales reel online when it’s complete! Most fans (myself included) have been anticipating a TV or film adaptation of the series for over a decade. I’d love to see if the animation lives up to the production art. I’m a little worried about the choice of music, though. Evanescence will give me flashbacks to high school….
  • Speaking of production art … yay we got our first look at the mages! I’m really digging the designs for Emily, Adriane, and Lyra. Ozzie, Stormbringer, and Kara … not so much.

  • Re: Ozzie’s character design: “everyone agrees he needs some work. We’ll tweak him pre-series start” [source]

Tangentially Related:

  • Rachel Roberts published a new book: Case of the Haunted Hearts. It’s the first of the Angel West YA mystery books that was teased on Red Sky Entertainment’s site post-Avalon: Web of Magic (and mentioned in our interview with her). I will start posting recaps here on Wednesday. This means that I’ll be putting my recap of Shadow and Bone on hold — which I’ve neglected to update for a couple of months on account of me being annoyed with the Protagonist and her Love Interest.

From Instagram image comments:

  • Re: voice cast: “our Canadian production partner has brought in a casting agency in Vancouver to cast the demo and the actors are all amazing. Once we get the network order we will approach potential star talent for the series as we would need a firm order for stars to commit.” [source]
  • Re: adapting the books: “pretty much follow the books, breaking them up in serialized eps” [source]
  • Re: Rachel Roberts’ involvement: “[…] Rachel’s in charge of story editing and wrote the pilot script” [source]
  • Re: series length: “I can tell we are designing 26 episodes for season 1” [source]
  • Re: fan involvement: Production claims “we’ll need lots of help getting the word out.” [source]
  • Re: convention promotion: “too soon, we have to get our network on board first to announce the go” [source]

A Personal Note to the Production Staff:

I’d love to officially help publicize the show! (Instead of unofficially, as I’m doing now.) You’re welcome to contact me via the handy Contact the Archive link above.
